Antimicrobial and antioxidant activity of Silver, Gold and Silver-Gold Alloy Nanoparticles phytosynthesized using extract of Opuntia ficus-indica

Abstract: Aqueous extract of Opuntia ficus-indica (OF) was employed to reduce salt solutions of silver nitrate, gold chloride and silver nitrate/gold chloride to OFAgNPs, OFAuNPs, and OFAg-AuNPs respectively. Characterization of the particles was carried out using different standard methods, and their antimicrobial and antioxidant activities were also evaluated. The UV-vis spectroscopy showed silver, gold and silver-gold alloys nanoparticles with surface plasmon resonance at 462, 545 and 539 nm, respectively. The signif… Show more

“…Ag particles can be fabricated by some different methods, and most of the Ag particles are easy to move and gather, but difficult to fix on the films. The electron beam lithography [33], oxidation-reduction [34] and other methods can fix the Ag particles on the surface of some substrates, but they are complicated and expensive. The authors can self-assemble monodisperse Ag nanoparticles on the surface of the alloy film through a simple method.…”

“…Nowadays, nanotechnology and nanomaterials have showed great potential to solve the water, air, and soil pollution problems [22,23]. In recent years, the application of nanoscale zero-valent iron (nZVI) in the in situ remediation of Cr(VI)-contaminated soil has attracted extensive attention [24].…”

“…Green synthesised extracts adopted by different researchers for the synthesis of AgNps includes cocoa bean extract [13], miracle fruit plant [14], Petiveria alliacea L. Leaf extract [15], agriwastes, enzymes and pigments [16], Buchholzia coriacea, Cocoa pod husk [17,18], Cola nitida [19,20], Persea Americana fruit peel [21], Opuntia ficaus-indica [22], Chasmanthera dependens [23] and so on. The biological method has several advantageous features for instance non-toxic, ecofriendly acceptable route, economical, very much feasible reaction conditions and such others.…”
