Antimicrobial and antioxidant activities of different propolis samples from north‐western Algeria

Abstract: Summary The aim of this study was the investigation of antimicrobial and antioxidant activities of different ethanolic extracts of propolis (EEP) collected from north‐western Algeria. Total polyphenols and flavonoids contents of extracts were measured. The UV absorption spectrum showed and confirmed their polyphenols constituents. All EEPs exerted antibacterial activity against Gram‐positive bacteria, but no effect on Gram‐negative bacteria. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of EEPs ranged from 0.01% … Show more

“…Biological activities of polyphenol-rich extracts from propolis show variations depending on its chemical composition. Similar results were observed for different origins of same countries including Portugal(Silva et al 2012;Moreira et al 2008;Miguel et al 2010), Turkey(Aliyazıcıoglu et al 2013), Algeria(Benhanifia et al 2013), China(Dong et al 2013), Poland(Socha et al 2015) and Brazilia(Righi et al 2013). The major components, namely quercetin, hesperidin and apigenin, have considerable biological activities such as antioxidant, anticancer, antibacterial(Wilmsen et al 2005; Kumar, Pandey 2005;Liu et al 2013).…”

“…So far, more than 300 compounds, such as polyphenols, terpenoids, steroids, sugars and amino acids were detected in raw propolis (18). However, many studies have reported that the flavonoids present in the propolis are responsible for its biological activities (19)(20)(21)(22)(23).…”

“…Propolis, a hard and resinous natural product derived by bees from plant juices, exhibits antibacterial activity due to its high flavonoid content (Benhanifia et al, 2013;Burdock, 1998;Kujumgiev et al, 1999). Grapefruit seed extract (GSE), a commercial product derived from the seeds and pulp of grapefruit, also has powerful antimicrobial properties (Lim et al, 2010) mainly due to the polyphenolic compounds it contains (Saito et al, 1998;Aloui et al, 2014).…”
