Antimicrobial activity, total phenolic content and flavonoid concentrations of Teucrium species

Abstract: In vitro antimicrobial activity of 21 crude extracts obtained from seven taxa of the genus Teucrium (T. chamaedrys, T. montanum, T. arduini, T. polium, T. scordium subsp. scordium, T. scordium subsp. scordioides and T. botrys) was tested against bacterial and fungal species. Minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) were determined using a microdilution analysis method. Total phenolic content and flavonoid concentrations were measured spectrophotometrically. Total phen… Show more

“…Many authors reported that plant extracts showed higher efficacy against bacteria than against fungi. In a study by Stanković et al (26), C. albicans strains were inhibited only by extracts of Teucrium scordium and T. botrys. In general, plant extracts exhibited higher antibacterial activity than antifungal activity, which was also confirmed for extracts of Tilia rubra subsp.…”

“…However, the effects of flavonoids on phytopatogenic fungi are not well documented. A few studies indicate that flavonoids are not correlated with antifungal activity [11] or can stimulate spore germination [15], while other authors found that extracts of some plant species are able to inhibit fungi and bacteria and that their ability is mainly due to flavonoids [16,17]. Only 2 flavonoids, pisatin and medicarpin, have been shown to be active against F. oxysporum.…”

“…Antimicrobial and antioxidant activity, total phenolic and flavonoid concentrations of Teucrium species have been studied by a number of researchers in the different parts of the world (Kucuk et al, 2006;Sarker et al, 2007Gursoy et al, 2009Nevcihan et al, 2009;Stanković et al, 2010;Kundaković et al, 2011;Stanković et al, 2012;Vlase et al, 2014).…”
