Antimicrobial Activity of the Ethanol Extract from Rubus coreanum against Microorganisms Related with Foodborne Illness

Abstract: This study analyzed the antibacterial activity of a Rubus coreanum (Bokbunja) ethanol extract. The antimicrobial activity was determined by disc diffusion, minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC), and growth inhibition methods with seven kinds of bacteria related to foodborne illness (Bacillus cereus, Escherichia coli, Escherichia coli O157:H7, Listeria monocytogenes, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus, and Salmonella typhimurium). In the results, disc diffusions of the ethanol extract from R. corean… Show more

“…Unripened R. crataegifolius is extensively used in combination with other herbal preparations in food, beverages and in Korean folk medicine for its management of impotence, inflammatory, hepatotoxicity, enuresis, and allergic disease (Cha et al, 2001;Oh et al, 2007;Yang et al, 2008). The plant is also shown to possess antibacterial (Jeon et al, 2012) as well as antiulcer (Kim et al, 2011) activity. The main constituents of RF are polyphenols including sanguine, coreanoside-F1, nigaichigoside, gallic acid, and ellagic acid (Oh et al, 2007;Kim et al, 2011;Jeon et al, 2012;Lim et al, 2012).…”

Among these, antioxidant phenolic compound ellagic acid possesses strong chemoprotective and anti-Helicobacter properties (Chung, 1998).…”
