Antimicrobial activity of tannin components from Vaccinium vitis-idaea L.

Abstract: Reactive oxygen species have been implicated as important pathological mediators in many clinical disorders, including periodontal disease. As a possible alternative for the treatment of periodontal disease, the antimicrobial activity of six tannins isolated from Vaccinium vitis-idaea L., with confirmed antioxidant activity, were assayed by the agar dilution method against selected periodontal pathogens, Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans, Porphyromonas gingivalis and Prevotella intermedia. The results showe… Show more

“…The synergistic activity observed might have been due to the presence of secondary metabolites present in the extracts and oil, such as tannins and flavonoids, which are synthesized by plants in response to microbial infection (Dixon et al, 1983;Ho et al, 2001), where they are capable of disrupting the cell wall or plasma membrane facilitating drug uptake (Figueredo et al, 2013;Matias et al, 2010a;Tsuchiya et al, 1996).…”

“…pode ser devida à presença de compostos como flavonoides, terpenos ou taninos reconhecidos com atividade para uma ampla variedade de microrganismos (Ho et al, 2001;Rajan et al, 2011).…”

“…Three possible mechanisms or their combinations are considered: (1) direct inhibition of microbial activity through toxic effects or inactivation of extracellular enzymes (Ani et al 2006, Scalbert et al 1991, Ho et al 2001) in denitrification, (2) decline in N substrates for denitrification by suppressing N mineralization and nitrification, (3) promotion of N 2 O reduction to N 2 gas through development of the anaerobic environment in the soil. It is well known that tannins can decrease N mineralization by binding proteins in proteintannin complexes (Fierer et al 2001, Kraus et al 2004.…”

“…Therefore, it is possible that the application of tannins reduced N 2 O emissions directly by suppressing the denitrification process, through antimicrobial activities towards extracellular enzymes or by direct toxicity to the microbes. Antimicrobial activity is one of the typical characteristics of polyphenolic compounds (Ani et al 2006, Salbert et al 1991, Ho et al 2001. Low-and high-TROPICS Vol.…”
