Antimicrobial activity of polyhexamethylene guanidine phosphate in comparison to chlorhexidine using the quantitative suspension method

Abstract: BackgroundPolyhexamethylene guanidine phosphate (PHMG-P) belongs to the polymeric guanidine family of biocides and contains a phosphate group, which may confer better solubility, a detoxifying effect and may change the kinetics and dynamics of PHMG-P interactions with microorganisms. Limited data regarding PHMG-P activity against periodontopathogenic and cariogenic microorganisms necessitates studies in this area. Aim is to evaluate polyhexamethylene guanidine phosphate antimicrobial activity in comparison to … Show more

“…P. gingivalis was one of the periodontal pathogens in the antimicrobial test because it is also the major pathogen among anaerobic Gram-negative bacteria involved in periodontitis (55,56). Antimicrobial activity of microparticles of PLGA containing chlorhexidine/cyclodextrin complexation was performed with P. gingivalis (57).…”

“…PHMG-P exhibits antimicrobial activity against various microorganisms, including bacteria, yeast, and mold, and has comparable strength to chlorhexidine, considered the 'gold standard' among antimicrobials (Vitt et al, 2015). Antimicrobials must exert selective toxicity against microorganisms without harming human tissues or cells.…”

“…Polyhexamethylene guanidine (PHMG) is an environmentally friendly high-molecular polymer with the characters of colorless, tasteless, solubility in water 8) . It has a strong antibacterial activity and offers a broad antibacterial spectrum, and it has been widely used for many years as antiseptics in medicine and the food industry 9,10) . Vitt et al 9) found that the bacteria of caries and periodontal diseases were killed by PHMG in a short period.…”

Vitt et al 9) found that the bacteria of caries and periodontal diseases were killed by PHMG in a short period. In addition, zinc oxide eugenol (ZOE) are the most common and conventional sealers used in endodontic treatment 11) which have good physical properties 12) but with weak antibacterial effect.…”
