Antimicrobial Activity of Galangin and Its Effects on Murein Hydrolases of Vancomycin-Intermediate Staphylococcus aureus (VISA) Strain Mu50

Abstract: Backgroud: Antibiotic treatment for infections caused by vancomycin-intermediate Staphylococcus aureus (VISA) strains is challenging, and only a few effective and curative methods have been developed to combat these strains. This study aimed to investigate the antimicrobial activity of galangin against S. aureus and its effects on the murein hydrolases of VISA strain Mu50. This is the first report on these effects of galangin, and it may help to improve the treatment for VISA infections by demonstrating the ef… Show more

“…Chrysin and its phosphate ester exert a strong inhibitory effect on Enterovirus EV71 [48]. Galangin significantly suppresses growth of vancomycin-intermediate Staphylococcus aureus (VISA) strain Mu50 [49]. Veloz et al [50] have shown that pinocembrin and apigenin are able to modify the architecture of S. mutans biofilm, reducing its thickness; antimicrobial activity against S. mutans has also been documented [50].…”

“…propolis extracts with a relative average percentage w/w of 14.15% and 1.19%, respectively. In the literature, galangin showed a MIC = 32 µg/mL against different types of S. aureus (ATCC25293, N315, and Mu50), significantly suppressing bacterial growth at concentrations of 4, 8, and 16 μg/mL [33]. In another paper, apigenin and galangin were investigated against sensitive and antibiotic resistant strains of S. aureus , Enterococcus faecalis, Enterococcus faecium , E. coli , and P. aeruginosa .…”

“…Another promising phenolic compound against HSV-1 is galangin (11), with IC 50 2.5 µM and SI 400. Further, galangin (11) has shown bacteriostatic activity against S. aureus (ATCC 25293) with MIC value 32 µg/mL [127]. Another phenolic with equal antiviral activity-naringin (17)-showed no inhibitory effect on several Gram-positive and Gram-negative, even at a concentration of 250 µM [128].…”
