Antimicrobial activity of Eucalyptus globulus oil, xylitol and papain: a pilot study

Abstract: Objective:To evaluate the in vitro antimicrobial activity of the Eucalyptus globulus essential oil, and of the xylitol and papain substances against the following microorganisms: Pseudomonas aeruginosa; Samonella sp.; Staphylococus aureus; Proteus vulgaris; Escherichia coli and Candida albicans. Method: The in vitro antimicrobial evaluation was used by means of the agar diffusion test and evaluation of the inhibition zone diameter of the tested substances. Chlorhexidine 0.5% was used as control. Results: The E… Show more

“…e highest inhibition diameters were seen with the vegetable oil of immature Eucalyptus marginata fruits with 21 mm against Staphylococcus aureus, 19 mm against Escherichia coli, and 18 mm against Enterococcus faecalis. Our results were in agreement with those found by Mota et al [26], who demonstrated that the essential oil from Eucalyptus tereticornis Sm exhibited antibacterial activity.…”

“…Both Candida species are more sensitive to the VCZ30 fungicide with an inhibition diameter of 35.5 mm. e obtained results confirm those of Mota et al [26], who reported that the essential oil of Eucalyptus tereticornis Sm has also fungicide activity able to completely destroy Saccharomyces spp., Sporobolomyces, and Hansenula.…”

“…The present study also indicated that eucalyptus oil was highly active against 8 out of ten isolates, and partially active against a multispecies sample. This coincides with a study by (Mota et al, 2015) who demonstrated that Eucalyptus globulus essential oil has a more potential antimicrobial activity than chlorhexidine against gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria.…”

“…As a popular folk remedy, papain was used to reduce pain, inflammation, infection, swelling, diarrhea, and allergies, in addition to improving digestion. It is also known for its wound healing properties [12], antibacterial activity [13], and exhibits inhibitory effects on platelet activation [14], monocyte-platelet aggregate formation [15], strongyloidiasis [16], atherosclerosis [17] and peritoneal adhesion [18]. However, its effect on obesity has not been studied.…”
