Twelve low resistant (LR) mutants of Trichoderma harzianum with the capability of grow fast at 0.8 μg/mL methyl benzimidazol 2 yl carbamate (MBC) were obtained using UV mutagenesis. MR and HR mutants which could grow fast at 10 and 100 μg/mL MBC, respectively, were isolated by step up selection protocols in which UV treated mutants were induced and mycelial sector screening was made in plates with growth medium. Subsequently, β tubulin genes of 14 mutants were cloned to describe the molecular lesion likely to be responsible for MBC resistance. Comparison of the β tubulin sequences of the mutant and sen sitive strains of T. harzianum revealed 2 new MBC binding sites differed from those in other plant pathogens. A single mutation at amino acid 168, having Phe (TTC) instead of Ser (TCC), was demonstrated for the HR mutant; a double mutation in amino acid 13 resulting in the substitution of Gly (GGC) by Val (GTG) was observed in β tubulin gene of MR mutant. Objective: The synthesis of novel benzimidazole-hydrazone derivatives has been carried out based on the previous findings that both these pharmacophores possess potent antimicrobial activities. The antibacterial properties of synthesized derivatives were screened against both Grampositive and Gram-negative bacteria.Methods: O-phenylenediamine on condensation with substituted aromatic acids in polyphosphoric acid gave benzimidazole nucleus which on reaction with ethyl chloroacetate and hydrazine hydrate in two different steps resulted in the formation of substituted acetohydrazides. The targeted compounds 6a-l were synthesized by reaction of substituted acetohydrazides with aromatic aldehydes and screened for their antibacterial potential by cup-plate method. Results:The synthesized benzimidazole-hydrazones exhibited moderate to strong antibacterial activities against Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis, Escherichia coli, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The compounds 6a-6f were found to be most effective against S. aureus, E. coli, and P. aeruginosa. Among all the synthesized compounds, the zone of inhibition of 6f in highest concentration, i.e., 100 µg/ml were found to be >31 mm against all the stains of bacteria. Conclusion:The antibacterial results revealed that the synthetized derivatives have significant antimicrobial properties and further structure activity relationship studies may develop more potent and less toxic molecules.

The allylic monomer N-allyl-N-butylbenzimidazolium bromide (ABBB) was synthesized by reacting allyl bromide with benzimidazole and subsequent quaternization with 1-bromobutane. Copolymers of ABBB with butyl acrylate (BA) were prepared in dimethyl formamide solution at 70°C using a free-radical polymerization technique with different monomer feed ratios. Monomer reactivity ratios for the ABBB-BA pairs were evaluated by the Fineman-Ross (r 1 = 0.40; r 2 = 1.49) and Kelen-Tüdõs (r 1 = 0.36; r 2 = 1.46) linearization methods. Thermal behavior of the copolymers of different compositions was evaluated by thermogravimetric analysis. The copolymers were tested for antimicrobial properties against selected strains of bacteria and fungi and were found to be active against the strains. The growth-inhibitory effect of the copolymers varied according to the composition of the polymer: the effect increased with increasing content of the substituted benzimidazolium group in the polymer chain.
