Antimicrobial activity from polymeric composites-based polydimethylsiloxane/TiO2/GO: evaluation of filler synthesis and surface morphology

Abstract: Antimicrobial substances may be used to reduce hospital infections and inhibit food contamination, thus ensuring the safety and well being of humans. The objective of this study was to evaluate the antimicrobial activity of the polymeric nanocomposites polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) embedded with two types of fillers based on titanium dioxide (commercial TiO 2 P25 versus TiO 2 via facile Microwave-assisted hydrothermal-MAH synthesis) and graphene oxide (GO). The nanocomposites were prepared using different compos… Show more

“…The direct contact test was performed to investigate the antimicrobial effects of the CHX-loaded nanotubemodified hydrogels in a planktonic model. 54 Samples (6 mm diameter × 2 mm thick) were disinfected by UV-irradiation and then placed on the wells of 96-well plates (n = 6/group). E. faecalis was grown overnight in BHI broth in aerobic conditions at 37 °C.…”

“…From these results, we conclude that a dramatic decline in bacterial growth was found with the raising of decorated TiO 2 ‐NPs ratio in the KF that showed the highest efficiency and activity against both type of bacteria by applying of higher concentration of nano‐TiO 2 (KF‐R/D‐0.6%). This result can be explained by the increase in the number of nanoparticles that embedded per unit area on the treated surface of the KF, thereby becoming very functioned by the R/D and TiO 2 NPs, thus maximizing the antibacterial effects 38,39 . Consequently, the obtained outcomes could open the path to produce novel interesting antibacterial KF fabrics for varying smart fabric technologies, thus conserving the cultural heritage.…”
