Objective : Sanguisorbae Radix (SO). that belong to Rosaceae is widely distributed in Asia including Korea, Japan and China. It has been used as traditional medicine from old times as a treatment for anti-inflammatory drugs. This study was designed to investigate the effects of n-BuOH fractions of SO on anti-oxidant effect and anti-microbial effect on Streptococcus mutans (S. mutans). Methods : The anti-microbial effect of n-BuOH fractions of SO. was assessed by the paper disk diffusion method and anti-oxidant effect was assessed by the DPPH radical scavenging effect, Superoxide anion radical scavenging effect and SOD like ability.Results : DPPH radical scavenging of the n-BuOH fraction from SO in 50 ug/mL was shown to be Fr-2 (89.9%), Fr-3 (88.7%), Fr-4 (76.3%), Fr-1 (59.4%), Fr-5 (56.2%). Superoxside anion radical scavenging activity of the n-BuOH fraction from SO. in 50 ug/mL for Fr-3 was shown to be 78%. SOD-like activity of n-BuOH fraction from the SO in 1000 ug/mL for Fr-3 were shown to be 76.1% respectively. The n-BuOH fraction from the SO had high anti-microbial effect on S. mutans. Conclusion : As a result, the n-BuOH fraction from SO. has good anti-microbial and anti-oxidant effects in a concentration-dependent manner.

Paeonia lactiflora Pall. is not only a traditional ornamental plant, but also an important medicinal plant. Currently, some P. lactiflora cultivars are used for ornamental purposes, but their potential medicinal value is ignored. To explore the medicinal potential of the ornamental varieties, the medicinal cultivar ‘Hangbaishao’ (HS) and the ornamental cultivar ‘Zifengyu’ (ZFY) were selected, and microbiome and metabolome analyses were performed to compare the composition of the endophytes and metabolites in the roots. The diversity and abundance of bacteria were not significantly different between HS and ZFY; however, the diversity and abundance of endophytic fungi in the ornamental cultivar ZFY were much higher than those in the medicinal cultivar HS. The flavonoids and phenolic acid contents of the ornamental cultivar ZFY were significantly higher than those of the medicinal cultivar HS, indicating that ZFY has medicinal value. The differences in root endophytes between HS and ZFY may lead to differences in phenolic acids and flavonoids. To explore the relationship between endophytes and the accumulation of phenolic acids and flavonoids, a joint analyses of the microbiome and metabolome were performed. The key bacterium, Ruminococcaceae bacterium GD7, led to the accumulation of phenolic acids and flavonoids in the ZFY. This study contributes to future research on the potential medicinal value of ornamental P. lactiflora and provides a new approach for realizing the ‘dual use of medicine and appreciation’ of P. lactiflora.

Methods: The Rubus coreanus Miquel was extracted with 70% methanol and concentrated with a rotary evaporator. Antifungal effect of Rubus coreanus Miquel extract on C. albicans was determined by paper disc diffusion method and standard plate count method. Seven different concentrations (2,4,8,15, 30, 60, 120 mg/ml) of the extract were tested by paper disc diffusion method. Two kinds of concentration (8, 60 mg/ml) of the extract were tested using standard plate count method on C. albicans with different incubating time (for 6, 12, 24 hours immediately after the cultivation). Morphological changes of C. albicans cells after exposure to the extract were observed with scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images. Results: The Rubus coreanus Miquel extract showed an antifungal effect on C. albicans in 8, 15, 30, 60, 120 mg/ml of concentrations (P<0.05). The extract with 8 mg/ml of concentration showed about 30% of growth inhibition at 6 h and with 60 mg/ml it showed about 90% of growth inhibition at 24 h. SEM analysis showed damaged surfaces of C. albicans cells when treated with Rubus coreanus Miquel extract. Conclusions: The Rubus coreanus Miquel might have the potential as a nobel growth inhibitory agent against C. albicans that causes oral infection.
