Antimicrobial action of an endophytic fungi fromSophor flavescensand structure identification of its active constituent

Abstract: Endophytic fungus BS002 was isolated and characterized from Sophora flavescens by plate method, which has broad antimicrobial activity. Isolation and trace of a new bioactive compound from the fungus’ culture extracts with the method of column chromatography and TLC biological autoradiography was conducted. Finally, it was identified as 6,7-(2′E) dibutenyl-5,8-dihydroxy-(Z)-cyclooct-2-ene-1,4-dione by nuclear magnetic resonance, infrared and liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry. The compound presented stron… Show more

“…In this study, for the first time, the plant growth-promoting activities of endophytes isolated from various organs of S. flavescens (shrubby sophora) were analyzed in order to compare and evaluate their effects on root growth, biomass and the photosynthetic pigments (chlorophyll-a, -b and carotenoids) in A. thaliana. Previous studies on fungal endophytes inhabiting the species S. flavescens comprised only two fungal genera, Aspergillus and Penicillium [14][15][16]. Based on our examinations, the fungal isolates represented the genera of Alternaria, Didymella, Fusarium and Xylogone, which have not been previously reported as fungal endophytes of S. flavescens.…”

“…Furthermore, endophytic fungi Aspergillus terreus and a Penicillium sp. were isolated from S. flavescens and their bioactive compounds were purified and identified [14,15]. According to Zhang et al, the A. terreus strain was also isolated from the seeds of this plant and the fungal production of a host metabolite was confirmed and optimized [16].…”

“…The PCR product was sent to Shanghai Sangon Biological Engineering Technology & Services Co., Ltd., for sequence determination. The sequence was compared to those of other related species downloaded from a public database using the EzBioCloud tool, and clustering analysis and phylogenetic tree construction using the Neighbor-Joining method were performed using MEGA 5.1 software [ 27 28 ].…”

“…Endophytes produce bioactive compounds similar to those in the host plant (Yu et al, 2014). In addition, novel chemical skeletons of secondary metabolites have antimicrobial, antiparasitic, cytotoxic, anti-inflammatory, antitumor, antioxidant and neuroprotective activities (Malhadas et al, 2017).…”
