Antileishmanial Activity ofHandroanthus serratifolius(Vahl) S. Grose (Bignoniaceae)

Abstract: This study aimed to evaluate the leishmanicidal activity of ethanol extract, fractions, and isolated substance from Handroanthus serratifolius against Leishmania amazonensis. Furthermore, this activity was related to cytotoxicity, and the selectivity index was determined. The ethanol extract was obtained by maceration of the stem powder, and the extract was subjected to fractionation on chromatographic column. The lapachol was obtained by acid base extraction followed by purification in chromatographic column.… Show more

“…Modulatory effect was not verified for BA indicating that the modulatory effect showed by DCMF could be attributed to their minor components or that it results of a synergy between BA and their minor constituents. The marked action of DCMF when compared with BA is possibly due to its lipophilic characteristics, where other compounds might act as a coadjuvant probably forming BA-conjugates in order to better interact with the cell membrane (Costa et al 2017). The advantage of BA-conjugated compounds in inducing a higher cytotoxic activity involving apoptosis associated with loss of mitochondrial membrane potential and increase in intracellular free Ca 2+ have been reported in eukaryotic cells (Xu et al 2017).…”

“…Based on the results of IC50 values in Table 3, extracts that have cytotoxic activity against T47D cells are extracts of leaves, stems, and roots. An extract otherwise has a high cytotoxic activity when the value of IC50 <500 mg / mL and is said to have a weak activity where the IC50 values>500 pg / mL [16]. The IC50 amount of positive control is 208.82 nM.…”
