Antihyperlipidemic and Biochemical Activities of Mcy Protein in Streptozotocin Induced Diabetic Rats

Abstract: Background: This study was aimed to evaluate the protective effects of a novel anti-hyperglycemic “Mcy protein” isolated from the fruits of Momordica cymbalaria in streptozotocin induced- diabetes rat model. Materials and Methods: Wild type and Streptozotocin induced diabetic male wistar albino rats were either treated with single intraperitoneal injection of 2.5 mg Mcy protein/kg body weight or acetate buffer daily for 30 days. Fasting blood glucose and, serum and tissue lipid levels were measured along with … Show more

“…Diabetes mellitus was induced in overnight-fasted rats by a single intraperitoneal injection of freshly prepared STZ (50 mg/kg, dissolved in 0.1 M cold citrate buffer, pH 4.5) as described by our group earlier [12, 13]. Diabetes was identified by polydipsia, polyuria and by measuring fasting blood glucose (FBG) levels.…”

“…STZ is a toxin that destroys the structure and function of the liver (Marella, Maddirela, Badri, Jyothi Kumar, & Chippada, ). Liver fat deposition reduces the inhibitory effect of insulin on glycogen production and weakens the ability of the insulin to activate glycogen synthase (Samuel et al, ).…”

“…This principle lowered the fasting plasma glucose level in normoglycemic and hyperglycemic rats [Singh and Chandra, 1977] Fruits, Seeds The protein named Mcy isolated from the fruits and seeds of M. cymbalaria lowered the fasting plasma glucose levels in streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats [Rajasekhar et al, 2010]. It also exhibited good antihyperlipidemic action [Marella et al, 2015] and inhibitory actions on aldose reductase and α-glucosidase activities [Marella et al, 2016]…”
