Objectives: The present study was conducted to determine antimicrobial, antiradical, and insecticidal activity of methanolic extract of the whole plant of Solanum virginianum L. (Solanaceae).Methods: Extraction of shade dried and powdered plant material was carried out by maceration process. Antibacterial and antifungal activities of extract were determined by agar well diffusion and poisoned food technique, respectively. Antiradical activity of extract was assessed by 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and 2,2-azinobis 3-ethylbenzothiazoline 6-sulfonate (ABTS) free radical scavenging assays. Insecticidal activity, in terms of larvicidal activity, was evaluated against 2 nd and 3 rd instar larvae of Aedes aegypti. Results:The extract exhibited inhibitory activity against all bacteria. Gram-positive bacteria showed greater susceptibility to extract when compared to Gram-negative bacteria. The extract was effective in inhibiting the mycelial growth of all test fungi with marked activity against Curvularia sp. and Alternaria sp. The extract scavenged DPPH and ABTS radicals dose dependently with an inhibitory concentration value of 45.66 and 7.37µg/ml, respectively. The extract showed concentration-dependent larvicidal activity with high lethal activity observed against 2 nd instar larvae with lethal concentration value of 0.82 mg/ml. Conclusion:In suitable form, the plant can be used as an effective agent against microbial infections and oxidative damage and to control insect vectors which transmit several diseases.

Enzymatic browning is a negative change that affects fruits and vegetables. This makes them unfit for consumption or reduces their shelf life and quality. This reaction alters the appearance, texture, fragrance, taste, and nutritional value of the food. In order for these products to be widely accepted by consumers, it is necessary to use natural compounds with anti-browning properties. Objective: The main objective of this study was to select effective extracts for the anti-browning (anti-polyphenol oxidase and anti-peroxidase), and antioxidant activities of by-products of Phoenix dactylifera L., Ghars variety, from Algeria. Method: Hydro-methanolic extracts from the pedicel, perianth, and leaves of date palm were examined to evaluate the phenol and total flavonoid contents. Using spectrophotometric techniques, the antioxidant activities were assessed using 1, 1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl radical (DPPH●), 2, 2’-azino-bis-(3-ethylbenzthiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) radical (ABTS●+) and Ferric Reducing Antioxidant Power (FRAP) assay, examined the enzyme inhibitory activity against polyphenol oxidase and peroxidase of Phoenix dactylifera L. extract. Results: The range of total phenolic and flavonoid contents was 12.29 to 48.98 mg gallic acid equivalent/g dry matter and 2.83 to 15.07 mg rutin equivalent/g dry matter, respectively. The pedicel extracts showed significant antioxidant activity in the DPPH and FRAP tests (IC50 = 0.0057 ± 0.0010 mg/ml and FEAC = 1.1961 ± 0.0647) compared to other extracts. However, in the ABTS assay, the leaf extract exhibited an interesting potency (IC50 = 0.0020 ± 0.0001mg/ml). The study on the anti-browning activity of date palm by-product extracts showed that it inhibited the activity of peroxidase enzyme from date palm fruit. Conclusion: This work is the first time the potential of an extract from date palm by-products to enzymatically reduce the browning of date palms is presented. According to the results obtained, the different organs studied from the Ghars date palm, are a powerful natural antioxidant and may include natural compounds that retard browning by enzymes.

Antiradical activity of leaf and fruit extracts was evaluated by 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and 2,2-azinobis 3-ethylbenzothiazoline 6-sulfonate (ABTS) radical scavenging assays. Insecticidal activity of leaf and fruit extracts, in terms of larvicidal and pupicidal activity, was assessed against larvae and pupae of Aedes aegypti. Results:Both the extracts inhibited all test bacteria. Marked antibacterial activity was displayed by fruit extract when compared to leaf extract. S. epidermidis and E. coli were inhibited to highest and least extent by both extracts respectively. Fruit extract was found to exhibit higher antifungal effect when compared to leaf extract. Leaf extract and fruit extract exhibited highest inhibitory activity against A. niger and A. flavus respectively. Leaf and fruit extracts scavenged DPPH radical's dose dependently with an IC50 value of 49.01µg/ml and 2.53µg/ml respectively. The scavenging of ABTS by leaf and fruit extracts was dose dependent and the IC50 Conclusion: Overall, fruit extract of G. gummifera exhibited marked antimicrobial, antiradical and insecticidal activity when compared to leaf extract. The plant can be used for developing agents/formulations effective against infectious microorganisms, oxidative stress and insect vectors that transmit dreadful diseases. The observed bioactivities could be ascribed to the presence of active principles which are to be isolated and characterized.value for leaf and fruit extract was 2.58µg/ml and 2.31µg/ml respectively. Fruit extract was shown to exhibit marked antiradical activity when compared to leaf extract. Leaf and fruit extracts exhibited dose dependent insecticidal activity in terms of larvicidal and pupicidal activity and the susceptibility of larvae and pupae to extracts was in the order II instar larvae>IV instar larvae>pupae. Fruit extract displayed marked insecticidal potential when compared to leaf extract.
