Antifeeding Potency of Neem (<i>Azadirachta indica</i>) Extractives and Limonoids against Termite (<i>Reticulitermes speratus</i>)

Abstract: Neem oil (HN) deterred feeding by Reticulitermes speratus in a no-choice bioassay. A methanol extract of HN (HN-01) was 4-fold more active than HN. Twelve other methanol extracts were subsequently evaluated, of which six were potent (PC95<1.0% w/w), three moderate (PC95=1-3% w/w), and the remaining three inactive (PC95 beyond bioassay limits). Eleven main limonoids were purified from the active chromatographic fractions of HN-01, which accounted for 81.5% of its activity. No acute toxicity was found, although … Show more

“…Gedunin has also been tested against Ostrinia nubilalis, presenting antifeedant activity at 10-50 ppm [77,78]. Reticulitermes speratus presented growth inhibition in the presence of gedunin (PC 95 = 218.4 µg/disc) and of a mixture of limonoids containing gedunin (PC 95 = 0.35% w/w), isolated from a neem oil extract [79,80]. For Helicoverpa armigera, gedunin presented EC 50 between 3.51 and 50.8 ppm and for Spodoptera litura an EC 50 of 40.4 ppm [81,82].…”

“…Seed kernel neem oil (A. indica) inhibited feeding of Reticulitermes speratus (Kolbe) at a dose of 5.44% and reduced R. speratus survival to 4% after 30 days in a no-choice bioassay (Serit et al, 1992). Ahmed et al (2020) observed that Acacia nilotica sapwood and heartwoods treated with neem oil showed resistance to termite attack of Odontotermes obesus.…”

“…Juss., known as neem, is an evergreen medicinal plant native to India and Myanmar. Neem extract has been reported to be effective against wood infestation by termites, including Reticulitermes speratus Kolbe (Serit et al 1992), and Coptotermes curvignathus Hohngren (Sajap et al 2006). Neem extract is also used as an antibacterial agent against Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus pyogenes, Escherichia coli, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa (El-Mahmood et al 2013).…”
