Antidiabetic and Antihyperlipidemic Effects of Sulphurenic Acid, a Triterpenoid Compound from Antrodia camphorata, in Streptozotocin-Induced Diabetic Mice

Abstract: The present study was designed to evaluate the protective effect of sulphurenic acid (SA), a pure compound from Antrodia camphorata, on diabetes and hyperlipidemia in an animal model study and to clarify the underlying molecular mechanism. Diabetes was induced by daily 55 mg/kg intraperitoneal injections of streptozotocin (STZ) solution over five days. Diabetic mice were randomly divided into six groups and orally gavaged with SA (at three dosages) or glibenclamide (Glib), fenofibrate (Feno) or vehicle for 3 w… Show more

“…The compound was first identified by [16] from basidiomata of “Polyporus” (i.e., Laetiporus sulphureus ) and has since then been discovered several times from various species of Laetiporus and other members of the Polyporales [33,34], including “Antrodia camphorata” (i.e. Taiwanofungus camphoratus ) [35,36]. In their study of the constituents of the latter fungus, [37] noted only very weak cytotoxic effects, which is in agreement with our own findings, reported by [12,14].…”

“…Adult female sprague dawley rats were selected for the study. After acclimatization period of 1 week, single intraperitoneal injections of STZ (55 mg/kg) mixed with 0.05 M citrate buffer administered to experimentally induce diabetes mellitus ( Lin et al, 2019 ). Twenty four hours later upon induction of diabetes mellitus, 5% w/v of glucose solution (2 ml/kg/BW) was orally given to the rats to avoid hypoglycemic mortality.…”

“…The most abundant landostane-type triterpenoids are eburicoic acid, sulfurenic acid, and dehydrosulphurenic acid. All of them show a significant antidiabetic activity [ 40 , 41 , 42 ].…”
