“…Roles of mixing associated with vortex Rossby waves and near-internal waves in determining the mescoscale circulation are detected by Cardona and Bracco [2012]. In addition, previous results have substantiated the presence of seasonal [e.g., He et al, 2002;Wang et al, 2003bWang et al, , 2008Chen et al, 2009;Zhuang et al, 2010b;1 Wang et al, 2012] and interannual [e.g., Hwang and Chen, 2000;Cheng and Qi, 2010] variations of the mescoscale process in the SCS. However, sources and sinks of the eddy energy in the SCS remain to be mapped and quantified.…”

“…Wang et al [57] (Figure 3). Both eddies moved southwestward along the continental shelf in the northern SCS after their generations, and their moving speeds are similar to that of the first baroclinic Rossby wave.…”

“…The anticyclonic eddies (AEs) in the NSCS found in the previous studies usually have a horizontal diameter of about 150-250 km and a vertical scale over 500 m and move southwestward at a speed (∼10 cm/s) of baroclinic Rossby wave along the continental slope of the NSCS (Wang and Chern 1987a, b;Li et al 1998;Guo et al 2007;Wang et al 2008a;Chen et al 2011b). The generation of an AE during winter is mainly attributed to the shedding from the Kuroshio loop current when its transport is weakened, and their formation is usually associated with the cyclonic eddy development next to it (Jia et al 2005;Nan et al 2011c).…”

“…Mesoscale eddies in the northern South China Sea (NSCS) have been documented and extensively studied (Li et al 1998;Metzger and Hurlburt 2001;Wang et al , 2008aJia and Liu 2004;Jia et al 2005;Wu and Chiang 2007;Yuan et al 2007;Chen et al 2010;Nan et al 2011a, c). Most of them are found to have originated from the vicinity of Luzon Strait (LS), and then propagate westward, resulting in large mesoscale sea-level variability along the continental slope (Zhuang et al 2010a).…”
