The inhibitory propensity of dry arecanut seed (DAS) extract was tested on aluminum metal in 0.5 M HCl media through weight loss, electrochemical, and probe techniques. Weight loss studies exhibited the anticorrosive effect of DAS extract constituents on the aluminum metal surface, protection efficiency, increased with an increase in the DAS extract concentration and subdued as the contact time lengthened. Inhibitive effect was afforded by adsorption of the DAS extract components which was approximated by proper Langmuir isotherm fit. The activation energy of aluminum corrosion and other thermodynamic functions were determined to corroborate the experimental findings and provide adequate insight into the aluminum corrosion inhibition mechanism. Inhibitive modality of the most potent inhibitor (DAS extract) was interpreted in detail through potentiodynamic polarization technique (Tafel plot). The impedance spectroscopy approach may well be able to foretell the formation of a persistent passive layer at the aluminum-acid interface that impedes the access of corrosive ions to the surface of aluminum. Surface analysis rationalized via atomic force microscopy technique manifested the absence of corrosion products and topographic modifications on the aluminum surface. The amorphous/crystalline nature of the inhibitor (DAS extract constituents) molecules adsorbed onto the aluminum surface was indicated by powder X-ray diffraction technique. Protection efficiency values obtained by all techniques were complied with each other.

The current investigation presents the corrosion activity of Elaeoselinum thapsioides (BEET) butanolic extract in 1 M HCl as a novel green source of corrosion inhibitor, and it's synergetic effect with another butanolic extract of Reutera lutea (BERL), whose belongs to the Apiaceae family. Weight loss measurements, potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) measurements have been done to study the inhibition efficiency. The obtained results showed that the inhibition efficiency of BEET alone increase with concentration and reached a value of 82% at 900 ppm. However, the maximum protection efficiency was more than 92% with the combination of BEET and BERL inhibitors. The rise of temperature caused a significantly decreased of inhibition efficiency. The potentiodynamic polarization results revealed that the extract functions as mixed-type inhibitor with predominance at anodic domain, and the adsorption process of the extract follows Langmuir isotherm. In addition, EIS shows that increasing the concentration of the inhibitor leads to an increase of the charge transfer resistance and reducing the double layer capacitance. The synergistic factor (S) was used to investigate the synergistic behavior of the selected inhibitors.

Illicium verum extract is investigated as a corrosion inhibitor of aluminium in the presence of an acid medium using gravimetric and impedance techniques. The gravimetric results reveal that the adsorption of inhibitor on the metal surface is physisorption. The impedance measurements are used to interpret the electrochemical process occurring at the interface of aluminium and corrosive medium. The surface characteristics of aluminium are evaluated using scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. The percentage composition of chemical constituents present in the extract is obtained using gas chromatographymass spectrometry and E-anethole is found to be the main chemical component. The interaction between the chemical constituents or inhibitor molecules and the metal surface are evaluated using Monte Carlo simulation. The determination of electron density on the inhibitor molecules is performed using density functional theory. The results from this respective study demonstrate good inhibitive properties of the illicium verum extract towards the corrosion of aluminium in concentrated hydrochloric acid solution. Al is resistant to corrosion due to the formation of stable aluminium oxide protective film over its surface in the presence of oxygen. However, the metal is corrosion resistant for engineering purposes only within the pH range of 4.5-8.5. [1] As the pH range is disturbed above or below this range, the metal undergoes rapid corrosion. During pickling and etching processes, Al comes into contact of acid solution having pH ranging between 1 and 3, which causes significant loss of the metal due to dissolution to form Al +3 . For pH, greater than 8.5, Al dissolves to form [Al(OH) 4 ] − . To reduce the corrosion rate of Al, appropriate inhibitors can be used in the pickling and etching solutions. [2][3][4][5] Inhibitors protect the metal by adsorbing onto the surface to form an adsorbed, dielectric barrier between the metal and the solution. As per the literature, the presence of hetero atoms and π-electrons in an inhibitor molecule is the basic criteria for determining good inhibitor behaviour.
