Anticorrosion Coatings with Self-Healing Effect Based on Nanocontainers Impregnated with Corrosion Inhibitor

Abstract: The development of active corrosion protection systems for metallic substrates is an issue of prime importance for many industrial applications. The present work shows a new contribution to the development of a new protective system with self-healing ability composed of hybrid sol−gel films doped with nanocontainers that release entrapped corrosion inhibitor in response to pH changes caused by corrosion process. A silica−zirconia based hybrid film was used in this work as an anticorrosion coating deposited on … Show more

“…The capsules are filled in different ways, e.g. by agitating the suspension of capsules and fillers, also under reduced pressure, the soaking of capsules in inhibitor solution and by applying the LBL deposition procedure [27,54,56,70]. In the case of soaking encapsulation, different inhibitor retention mechanisms can be distinguished.…”

“…The content of Se increased rapidly for the first three bilayers but relatively slowly for the next five bilayers, and reached a maximum amount of 1.5310 3 μg L 1 cm 2 on each piece of film (diameter 1 cm) after the eighth bilayer. The content decreased at the ninth bilayers a bit, probably due to self-healing of electrostatic assembly film, which is that the surface charge density may reach a constant after several depositions [41].…”

“…Figure 9. Schematic illustration of the coating morphology and the shape memory assisted self-healing (SMASH) concept [35] Mikhail L. Zheludkevich et al [36] Another methodology for disintegration movement on request is proposed in this work giving insightful self-recovering ability to the mutt sol-gel guarded films. Controllable transport is refined combining nano-compartments of benzotriazole inhibitor in the half and half pretreatments.…”
