Anticonvulsant activity of bioflavonoid gossypin

Abstract: The anticonvulsant activity of gossypin was investigated by studying the effects on seizures induced by pentelentetrazole, strychnine and maximal electroshock convulsive methods in mice. Gossypin (10 and 20 mg/kg) significantly reduced the duration of convulsion in tonic seizure induced by pentelenetetrazole (95 mg/kg, intraperitoneally). Gossypin (20 mg/kg p.o) significantly reduced the tonic extensor convulsion induced by strychnine and maximum electroshock-induced convulsions.

“…On the other hand STR induces convulsions by antagonising glycine receptor and increases postsynaptic excitability and ongoing activity in dorsal neurons [37,38]. PTZ is the most popular and widely used chemically induced seizure model and it represents an effective model for human generalized myoclonic and also absence seizure while strychnine model is considered valid for primary generalized seizures [39].…”

“…30 Generally compounds with anticonvulsant activity in the petit mal epilepsy are effective in the pentelenetetrazole-induced seizure model. 31 Data from the study showed that the tonic convulsion produced by pentelenetetrazole was significantly delayed by ethanol extract of Cleome rutidosperma.…”

“…Presence of different groups in the basic chemical structure affects solubility and water solublilty of gossypin, which is mainly due to the presence of a glucose moiety in its chemical structure [10]. In the nature, gossypin is present in different plants of Malvaceae family [20]. Presence of glucose moiety in the gossypin chemical structure makes it soluble in water wheras it is also sparingly soluble in alcohol.…”

“…Further gossypin also significantly reduced the tonic extensor convulsion induced by strychnine and maximum electroshock-induced convulsions [20]. Effect of gossypin, myrcitrin and naringin were tested in elevated plus maze test to know its anxiolytic activity.…”
