Anticipation in conference interpreting: a cognitive process

Abstract: In conference interpretation research, anticipation is usually seen as the oral production of a particular part of a message in special circumstances. In psychophysiological research, however, anticipation is a mental process. The article presents a revised defmition of anticipation that takes account of both approaches. It does so in terms of delibérate enrichment, a conceptual tool from relevance theory. Anticipation in conference interpreting is found to yield a high number of strengthenings rather than del… Show more

“…As cited in Vandepitte (2005), Lederer introduces different types of anticipation. Firstly, she recognizes "anticipations based on language prediction" (which have later been referred to as linguistic anticipation) on the one hand, and "anticipations based on sense expectation" (which have later been called extra linguistic anticipation).…”

“…Rhetorical moves, defined as «largely predictable functional components in a text» (Danni, 2020, p. 3), represent a potentially fruitful avenue to explore in simultaneous interpreting training since prediction, or anticipation as interpreting strategy is often discussed in literature (cf. Van Besien, 1999;Vandepitte, 2001). While recent empirical findings are inconclusive that anticipation is particularly prolific in some settings (Dayter, 2020), the role of context in interpreting should not be underestimated (Chmiel, 2021).…”

“…The underlying rationale is that cognitive processes and strategy use in SI leave traces in interpreted texts, and therefore can be detected (Ivanova, 2000;. Text analysis has been widely used by researchers to identify individual strategies of particular interest (e.g., Vandepitte, 2001;Petite, 2005) and to explore all possible strategies (e.g., . The other method is called immediate retrospection (Ericsson & Simon, 1980.…”
