Anticancer properties of chitosan on human melanoma are cell line dependent

Abstract: Purpose: Chitosan, a natural macromolecule, is widely used in medical and pharmaceutical fields because of its distinctive properties such as bactericide, fungicide and above all its antitumor effects. Although its antitumor activity against different types of cancer had been previously described, its mechanism of action was not fully understood. Materials and Methods: Coating of chitosan has been used in cell cultures with A375, SKMEL28 and RPMI7951 cell lines. Adherence, proliferation and apoptosis were inve… Show more

“…Compared with free MIF, MCNs showed enhanced anti-proliferative activity, indicating that the anticancer effects of MCNs could be due to the synergistic effects of Cs and MIF. Previous studies using other cancer cell lines and other anticancer drugs also found the anticancer effects of Cs and the synergistic interplay of CNs and anticancer drugs [3536]. Besides, the sustained release of MIF from the CNs could be another reason for the enhanced anti-proliferative efficiency of MCN.…”

“…NPs prepared from CS have shown promising potential in oral delivery of bioactives despite its low toxicity and high loading potential . Previous study confirmed the anticancer activity of CS against human breast cancer MGC803 cells and human gastric carcinoma cells .…”

“…The mechanism of action of chitosan as an anti-proliferative agent has been well reported, even if the underlying molecular mechanism has not been fully investigated yet. The antiproliferative properties of chitosan have been tested in several reports with different human cancer cell lines such as breast, gastric carcinoma, melanoma and monocytic leukemia cell lines [95,[112][113][114][115][116].…”
