Anticancer potential of quercetin: A comprehensive review

Abstract: Diet plays a key role to maintaining healthy life. Many natural products present in our diet, such as flavonoids, can prevent the progression of cancer. Quercetin, a distinctive bioactive flavonoid, is a dietary component that has attracted the attention of dietitians and medicinal chemists due to its numerous health-promoting effects. It is an outstanding antioxidant that has a well-documented role in reducing different human cancers. Quercetin exhibits direct proapoptotic effects on tumor cells and thus can … Show more

“…On the other hand, this compound could inhibit the invasion and migration of tumor cells. However, the structure of quercetin will be affected by oxidation (Rauf et al, ; Zeng et al, ). Also, quercetin‐induced apoptosis happened in a variety of cell types, including malignant pulmonary mesothelioma and human leukemia HL‐60 cells (Chae et al, ).…”

“…Quercetin and kaempferol are the main representative molecules (Figure ). A recent work has described the role of quercetin exploiting the previous published papers on the effect of quercetin (Hirpara, Aggarwal, Mukherjee, Joshi, & Burman, ; L. Li, Zhang, & Du, ; Miltonprabu et al, ; Oboh, Ademosun, & Ogunsuyi, ; Rauf et al, ), and (Calderón‐Montaño, Burgos‐Morón, Pérez‐Guerrero, & López‐Lázaro, ; A. Y. “…Concerning quercetin (Figure ), one of the main representative molecules belonging to subgroup of flavonols as outlined by Rauf et al (), it is worth mentioning the work of Wilms, Hollman, Boots, and Kleinjans (), on the protection by quercetin and quercetin‐rich fruit juice against induction of oxidative DNA damage and formation of BPDE‐DNA adducts in human lymphocytes.…”
