Anticancer Potential of Cratoxylum formosum Subsp. Pruniflorum (Kurz.) Gogel Extracts Against Cervical Cancer Cell Lines

Abstract: Background: Most northeast Thai vegetables may play roles in human health by acting as antioxidant and anticancer agents. Recent study showed that Cratoxylum formosum subsp. pruniflorum (Kurz.) Gogel. (Teawdang) could inhibit growth of liver cancer cell lines. Cervical cancer, which has human papilloma virus as its main cause, is found at high incidence in Thailand. Due to increasing drug resistance, searches for potential anticancer compounds from natural source are required. Therefore, our purpose was to eva… Show more

“…Vero cells, isolated from African green monkey kidney epithelial cells, was used as normal control instead of normal human cervical cells due to ethical issues, which is a limitation in the present study. However, previous studies (30,31) have also used Vero cells as control. DMSO is often used in biological studies for solubilizing drugs or studied compounds.…”

“…CF appeared to inhibit the growth of HepG2 cancer cells. Previous in vitro studies revealed that CF inhibits growth and induces apoptosis in numerous types of cancer cell, including liver (18), oral (24), bile duct (19) and cervical (25). Senggunprai et al (19) demonstrated that CF was potently cytotoxic against CCA KKU-M156 cells, induced cell apoptosis and inhibited colony formation.…”

“…From our previous report, CEE and CME had cytotoxic effect on both HPV-infected (HeLa and SiHa) and HPV-non infected (C-33A) cervical cancer cell lines. CEE contained gallic acid, resveratrol and quercetin (Promraksa et al, 2015). Gallic acid and quercetin can inhibit migration and invasion of oral squamous cell carcinoma, SCC-4 and SAS, through inhibition of NF-κB and matrix metalloproteinase-2 and -9 (Lai et al, 2013;Kuo et al, 2014).…”
