Antibody-Conjugated Silica-Modified Gold Nanorods for the Diagnosis and Photo-Thermal Therapy of Cryptococcus neoformans: an Experiment In Vitro

Abstract: BackgroundCryptococcus neoformans is an encapsulated yeast. There is still little quick and effective solution for the diagnosis or treatment of C. neoformans infection at an early stage in clinical. Antibody-conjugated silica-modified gold nanorods (GNR-SiO2-Ab) can conjugate C. neoformans selectively. It may provide a possibility for treatment of cryptococcosis safely and effectively.MethodsGold nanorods (GNRs) were synthesized according to the seed-mediated template-assisted protocol. Anti-C. neoformans ant… Show more

“…TEM images of NRs coated with SiO 2 are shown in Figure a. During the whole SiO 2 coating formation, the concentration of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) surfactant was controlled and tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) was used as a precursor of silica for NPs functionalization. According to our results, the thickness of the coating can be changed by varying the concentration of the CTAB surfactant in solution. The hydrolysis and condensation of TEOS during the formation of SiO 2 can be catalyzed by a change in pH.…”

“…Many inorganic nanosystems have both imaging and treatment feasibility, such as SIONs used for MRI and thermal therapy, 168 AuNPs for CT and radiation therapy, 169 gold nanorods for CT contrast enhancement, and PTT. 170 Both, all-in-one and one-for-all design approaches, possess merits and demerits. The aspects most remarkably discriminating the two approaches are clinical translationmanufacturing methodologies and presumable toxicity.…”
