“…7a, b and c. The rough type LPS and a 24 kDa protein were the two dominating antigens of V. salmonicida in wol$sh, which is similar to findings in salmon (Espelid et al, 1987;Bøgwald et al, 1990). The A-layer protein and LPS of A. salmonicida carry the dominating epitopes in salmon, and high antibody responses are induced in several salmonid species (Hastings & Ellis, 1990;Lund et al, 1991;Aakre et al, 1994Aakre et al, , 1999. The present results from wol$sh are in accordance with this and also similar to results from Ingilae et al (2000), who studied the antibody responses in halibut and wol$sh after vaccination with an oil-emulsified vaccine against atypical A. salmonicida.…”

“…V. salmonicida has a rough-type LPS with a low molecular weight oligosaccharide (Bøgwald et al, 1991;Edebrink et al, 1996) and the reactivity of salmon antibodies with non-O epitopes like core has not been shown. Jakobsen et al (1999) reported that salmon did not produce antibodies to core of Aeromonas salmonicida spp salmonicida LPS in contrast to rabbits. It is not known if salmon in general lack antibodies to the core of LPS or whether this varies with the type of LPS.…”

“…It is unknown if the observed antibodies represent specific antibodies against F. psychrophilum or represented cross-reacting antibodies induced by antigens from the normal bacterial flora. This cross reactivity may be induced by common epitopes in the bacterial peptidoglycan layer [26]. The rainbow trout used in the present study were reared in fresh water in a non-commercial farm and the fish had not been vaccinated against F. psychrophilum or any other fish pathogen.…”
