Antibiotics Susceptibility in Bacterial Keratitis and Proper Initial Treatment

Abstract: Purpose: The present study aims to determine the common pathogens involved in the etiology of bacterial keratitis and to analyze not only the antibiotic susceptibility of bacterial isolates from patients with bacterial keratitis but also the propriety of initial treatment. Methods: A retrospective study of 161 eyes in 161 patients with bacterial keratitis, who were diagnosed by cultures from 2000 to 2011, was performed. Causative bacteria and antibiotic susceptibility were evaluated in consecutive 6-year perio… Show more

“…While all strains were sensitive to gentamicin, one (25%) was sensitive to ceftriaxone, two (25%) were sensitive to cefotaxime and, one (25%) was sensitive to streptomycin. Similar to this study, Yoon et al [26] reported that all Serratia marcescens strains isolated from bacterial keratitis cases were susceptible to gentamicin and cefotaxime. According to these results, it may be suggested that the susceptibilities of Serratia marcescens strains to the same antibiotic do not vary much.…”

“… 15 16 Antibiotic susceptibility testing (AST) is widely used to select appropriate antibiotics in clinical practice. 17 18 The most generally used method of AST is agar disk diffusion first established by Kirby-Bauer. The agar disk diffusion method processes with paper disks containing antibiotics upon the plate of bacteria according to the standard of the Clinical and Laboratory Standard Institute (CLSI).…”
