Antibiotic susceptibility of Staphylococci isolated from bovine mastitis in Algeria

Abstract: Objective: This work aimed to determine the resistance and/or the susceptibility to antibiotics of staphylococci isolated from cattle with mastitis in the North of Algeria. Materials and Methods: The disk diffusion method was carried out to reveal the antibiotic resistance in accordance to the National Committee for Clinical Laboratory Standards guidelines in the Mueller-Hinton agar. Results: Coagulase-negative Staphylococci … Show more

“…Carriage of MRSA in healthy poultry was reported and emphasized that antibiotic resistance was higher in the recent isolates than prior isolates [ 6 ]. A high percentage of methicillin resistance in Staphylococci isolated from bovine mastitis was also reported in Algeria [ 7 ].…”

“…In all clinical isolates, the resistance rate of S. aureus to gentamicin was 7.7% which was similar (7.0%) with a study performed in Algeria [ 25 ]. In Algeria, no resistance to gentamicin was found in staphylococci in milk [ 54 , 55 ]. One S. aureus isolate exhibiting phenotypic resistance to gentamicin harboured the aac A- aph D gene which is in contrast to previous studies [ 16 , 33 ].…”

“…12 Multi-drug resistant strains are resistant to three or more groups of antibiotics. 13 In this study S aureus ATCC 25923 (penicillin-susceptible strain), S aureus ATCC 29213 (penicillin resistant, beta-lactamase positive strain), and MRSA ATCC 35591 (positive for both the mecA and PVL genes) were used as a control or reference strains.…”
