Antibiotic residues in honey: a public health issue

Abstract: Honey has numerous uses and composes formulations of many food, pharmaceutical, and cosmetic products due to its chemical, biological, and sensorial characteristics. In recent years, several reports and scientific articles claim the contamination of honey by antibiotics, a fact that is a public health problem since the ingestion of them can cause several side effects. In this sense, the purpose of this work was to carry out a literature review in international circulation databases about the contamination of h… Show more

“…The mentioned characteristics and increasing demand for Armenian honey emphasize the importance of its safety. While honey is generally considered a nourishing and beneficial product, there are growing concerns regarding antibiotic residues (Lima, et al, 2020). Antibiotics in various fields of agriculture, including beekeeping practices for disease prevention and treatment, raise issues related to the potential impact on product safety.…”

“…Governments and organizations are implementing guidelines and standards to prevent the occurrence of antibiotic residues in honey. Regular monitoring and testing of honey samples for residue detection play a crucial role in maintaining honey purity and consumer safety (Bonerba, et al, 2021;Lima, et al, 2020). The results of the annual residue analysis can provide comprehensive insights, enabling the identification and characterization of potential risks induced by antibiotic residues.…”

“…Honey is a natural and healthy product widely consumed in the world, due to its nutritional properties and pharmaceutical activities in modern medicine. , However, considering that honeybees are susceptible to several contagious and diffuse diseases, antibiotics have been used to prevent and/or treat bacterial infections to maintain honey production by beekeepers. Among the available antibiotic classes, sulfanilamide (SFL) has been extensively employed, due to its broad spectrum of action and low cost .…”
