Antibiotic Applications in Fish Farms and Environmental Problems

Abstract: Today, fish farming creates significant impacts on water resources and food chain from a global perspective, as compared to those of the other agricultural activities. Some methods and chemicals heavily using production and consumption periods in fish farming are related to the environmental damages. Chemicals have a common usage in both the world and our country to protect the products from the negative effects of diseases. They are also imposed to increase the production. As Turkey has significant potential … Show more

“…Nowadays, research is ongoing to produce safe sh feed additives or supplements to replace chemotherapeutics and synthetic hormones (Dawood et al 2018). Even though numerous growth stimulants, synthetic hormones, and chemical therapies have been utilized to increase sh productivity and disease treatment (Chuah et al 2016), their prolonged use has major negative consequences on the sh, environment, and consumer health (Bahadir et al 2019).…”

“…The One Health concept stresses reducing antibiotic resistance concerns at the human−animal−environment interface, with the goal of improving control mechanisms and addressing the complicated issue regarding antibiotic overuse in aquaculture [23][24][25][26][27]. Furthermore, occupational health hazards of aquaculture workers and human health risks connected with recreational waters posed by antibiotic resistance have been emerging issues but have been scarcely evaluated [28,29]. Some pathogenic bacteria, such as Aeromonas, play an important role in the human−animal−environment interface, and their ability to transmit tetracycline resistance under oxytetracycline stressors has been investigated [30,31].…”

“…Although several growth promoters, synthetic hormones and chemotherapeutics were being used for enhancing fish yield and for the treatment of diseases [3] (pp. 118-127), their continuous use has posed serious adverse effects on fish, environment and its consumers health [4]. Currently, consumers' demand for safe and quality farmed fish is increasing, and to meet these demands, researchers have intensified efforts to develop safe fish feed additives/supplements to substitute traditionally used synthetic hormones and chemotherapeutics agents [5].…”
