Antibiofilm activity and bioactive phenolic compounds of ethanol extract from the Hericium erinaceus basidiome

Abstract: Biofilm formation has become a serious health and environmental problem. Mushrooms are now considered a valuable source of bioactive compounds with antimicrobial properties. The lion's mane mushroom ( Hericium erinaceus [HE]) has been used as an antimicrobial for ulcers and gastritis in East Asian countries. However, studies on the antibiofilm activities of HE basidiome against biofilm-forming pathogenic bacteria and their bioactive compound profiles are still limited. The purpose of thi… Show more

“…Next, We performed a biofilm assay, EPS assay, and Biomass assay after applying different concentrations of CA. Multiple researchers have used this similar protocol to test the antibiofilm activity of phenolic compounds(14), such as (Albutti, Aet al) who tested Gallic Acid Antibiofilm and biofilm dispersal properties against Proteus spp ., Escherichia coli , Pseudomonas spp ., Salmonella spp ., Streptococcus mutans ., and Staphylococcus aureus as well as multispecies bacteria(15). Also,( Lin Yue et al ) have tested Cinnamic Acid derivatives as antibiofilm agents against multispecies bacteria(16).…”

“…In a different study, the presence of 4hydroxybenzoic acid, α-resorcylic acid, 4-coumaric acid, ferulic acid and syringic acid in H. erinaceus was reported [28]. In another study, the presence of protocatechuic acid, p-coumaric acid, succinic acid, catechin, 2-hydroxybenzoic acid and ferulic acid was reported in H. erinaceus [36]. In this context, in addition to these studies, it was seen in our study that H. erinaceus could also be an important source of phenolic compounds determined within it.…”
