Antibacterial Spectrum of Umckaloabo (Pelargonium Sidoides) on Upper Airway Infectıon Agents

Abstract: Aim: In this study we aimed to search the antibacterial effect of the drugs with active ingredients of Pelargonium sidoides on different bacterial species isolated from the throat cultures of patients with upper airway infection. Methods: Antibacterial activity on 72 Streptococci, 48 Stapyhlococcus, 32 Neisseriae spp, 20 Moraxella catarrhalis, and 20Haemophilus influenzae was evaluated by using microdilution broth method. Results: Antibacterial effect was detected on 8 Neisseriae spp, 4 Haemophilus influenzae,… Show more

“…It should be noted that the standardized root extract EPs ® 7630 has hitherto not been subjected to similar antibacterial studies, though moderate activities are commonly noted. Independent support of weak direct antibacterial activities followed from studies using the liquid preparation Umca ® and isolates ( Streptococcus pneumonia, S. pyogenes, S. viridans, Staphylococcus aureus, S. epidermis, Neisseria spp., Moraxella catarrhalis, Haemophilus influenza ) obtained from the throat cultures of patients [27]. Employing a microdilution broth method, MIC values were in the range of 200–1,600 μg/mL, with MICs >800 μg/mL for most of the bacteria tested.…”

“…В результате антибактериальный эффект был обнаружен в отношении микроорганизмов вида Streptococci (Pneumococcus), Staphylococci, Neisseria, Moraxella catarrhalis и Haemophilus influenza. Исследователи пришли к выводу, что препарат может применяться в качестве терапии острых бактериальных инфекций верх-них дыхательных путей, однако не стоит отдавать ему предпочтение в случаях, требующих использования тра-диционных антибактериальных препаратов [15].…”
