Ice skating is a community-based sport and a popular leisure activity that can also have benefits for people with disabilities. Ice skating and children with hearing impairment: Self-concept, behavioural and emotional problems, and sleep quality of the children with hearing impairment significantly improved after ice skating. Ice skating programmes may be considered as a rehabilitation alternative for children with hearing impairment. Ice skating and children with visual impairment: Caution must be use when including children with visual impairment in ice skating programmes because of possible negative psychological outcomes. Balance exercises before starting the practices on ice should be considered for preventing some possible negative outcomes in children with visual impairment.
The aim of this study was to determine the effects of vitamin E (VE) and L-carnitine (LC) supplementation, separately or in combination, on radiation-induced oral mucositis and myelosuppression. Group 1 received no treatment (control). Group 2 received 15 Gray of 60Co gamma irradiation as a single dose to total cranium (IR). Group 3, 4, and 5 received irradiation plus 40 mg/kg/day VE (IR+VE) or 200 mg/kg/day LC (IR+LC) or in combination (IR+VE+LC) respectively. Clinically and histopathologically, assessments of mucosal reactions were performed by two independent experts in Radiation Oncology and Pathology, respectively. Hematologic analyses and antioxidant enzyme evaluations were also performed. Irradiation significantly increased oral mucositis, and decreased thrombocyte and White Blood Cell counts. A significant increase in malondialdehyde (MDA) levels and decrease in superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) activities in plasma were found in the IR group. VE and LC administration, separately, plus irradiation significantly delayed the starting day, and reduced the severity of, oral mucositis. This administration also reduced a fall in the numbers of thrombocyte and WBC caused by irradiation, and decreased the MDA level, and increased the activity of SOD and CAT enzymes in the plasma. VE and LC, in combination, plus irradiation did not provide a superior radioprotection against radiation-induced toxicities.
For children undergoing tonsillectomy, intraoperative subhypnotic propofol infusion combined with dexamethasone treatment provides a better prophylaxis against postoperative vomiting than does dexamethasone alone.
Primary hyperparathyroidism is a fairly frequent pathologic diagnosis characterized by hypersecretion of parathyroid hormone, which results from adenomas in 80% to 85% of all cases. At clinical onset, the most common symptoms are hypercalcemia-related and some of them are pain due to kidney stones, polyuria, gastrointestinal, and neurologic disorders, whereas rarer symptoms are due to brown tumors and expansive lesions often found in fibrocystic osteitis. Brown tumors represent the terminal stage of the remodeling processes caused by an increased osteoclastic activity and fibroblastic proliferation during primary or secondary, albeit more seldom, hyperparathyroidism. The manifestation of primary hyperparathyroidism as skeletal disease has nearly disappeared in the last 2 decades. Cases are now most often diagnosed by the coincidental finding of asymptomatic hypercalcemia. Advanced screening techniques have made clinical evidence of bone disease rare. This article contains a case of brown tumor on the maxilla, palate, and mandible in addition to nephrectomy and proximal femur fracture, which are probably associated with primary hyperparathyroidism although less common nowadays. The diagnosis was suggested by the clinical history and confirmed by biochemical, radiologic, and histopathologic evidence. Excision of a parathyroid adenoma normalization of the metabolic status was then realized.
Aim. The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of Nigella sativa (NS) in experimental bacterial rhinosinusitis.
Material and Methods.Bacterial rhinosinusitis was induced with Staphylococcus aureus. Rabbits were divided into control, NS 50, NS 100 and NS 200 mg/kg/d groups. NS was given orally for 7 days. The same volume of normal saline was given as a vehicle to the control group for the same period. At 7 days post-treatment, mucosal samples were excised from the treated and control groups for measurements of superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), myeloperoxidase (MPO) and malondialdehyde (MDA). Conclusion. These findings show that administration of NS increased the SOD, GSH-Px activities and decreased the lipid peroxidation and MPO activity in experimental rhinosinusitis in rabbits. NS prevented oxidative stress by scavenging reactive oxygen species generated in rhinosinusitis model in rabbits.
Results. SOD and GSH-Px activities significantly increased in the NS
We determined that laryngeal cancer was associated with oxidative stress, which may be quantified by measuring 8-hydroxy-2'-deoxyguanosine. For a patient with a suspicious laryngeal lesion, 8-hydroxy-2'-deoxyguanosine levels in blood and urine can provide advance information about the likely diagnosis.
Snoring is a common complaint, especially among the elderly individuals. In the treatment of snoring, many options, surgical or nonsurgical, are available. In this randomized study, we used a modified technique including some components of radiofrequency-assisted uvulopalatoplasty (RAUP) and Uvulopalatopharyngoplasty UPPP (modified-RAUP, MRAUP) and RAUP in a control group. A total of 60 patients (58 male and 2 female), 30 in each group (MRAUP and RAUP groups), with an average age of 38 +/- 9 years were included in the study. In the MRAUP group, in addition to the modified surgery, preoperative steroid injection was used as a preemptive analgesic and pre-incisional steroid injection and closure of the edges of the incision were performed to achieve better relief of pain. Snoring score, pain at rest and during swallowing, analgesic consumption and speech score were evaluated using standard 10 cm visual analog scales (VAS). Operation time and other complications were recorded. The patients in the MRAUP group had better pain scores, both at rest and during swallowing, and less analgesic consumption. Although operation time was longer in the MRAUP group compared to that of the RAUP group, snoring score, evaluated from day 1 to the 6th month after operation, was significantly better in the MRAUP group. Postoperative speech scores at each visit were similar in both groups. In the MRAUP group, 87% of the patients (26 patients) had a final VAS for snoring below 3, while in the RAUP group 63% of the patients (19 patients) were below 3 on the scale (P < 0.05). Thus, MRAUP seems to be a promising technique for surgery as a treatment for snoring.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
