Antibacterial Potential by Rupture Membrane and Antioxidant Capacity of Purified Phenolic Fractions of Persea americana Leaf Extract

Abstract: The present research focused on evaluating the antibacterial effect and the mechanism of action of partially purified fractions of an extract of Persea americana. Furthermore, both its antioxidant capacity and composition were evaluated. The extract was fractionated by vacuum liquid chromatography. The antimicrobial effect against Staphylococcus aureus (ATCC 6538), Escherichia coli (ATCC 11229), Pseudomonas aeruginosa (ATCC 15442), and Salmonella choleraesuis (ATCC 1070) was analyzed by microdilution and the m… Show more

“…The multiple reaction monitoring (MRM) transition of coumarin compounds revealed the presence of esculin and scopoletin. Both esculin and scopoletin displayed antimicrobial activity against Gram-positive bacteria [ 71 , 72 ]. Additionally, scopoletin can regulate hyperglycemia through the regeneration of pancreatic β -cells and the attenuation of insulin resistance in high-fat diet/streptozotocin-induced diabetic mice [ 73 ].…”

“…Due to the increase in the avocado fruit's production and consumption, the amount of agro waste is increasingly becoming a major problem for the environment [1,4]. During harvesting, avocado leaves are discarded without any industry application [5]; however, the extracts obtained from avocado leaves contain appreciable amounts of bioactive compounds such as alkaloids, triterpenoids, saponins, carbohydrates, fatty acids and polyphenols [6][7][8][9][10]. Plant phenolic compounds are found in high concentrations in plant leaves and the green stems, with them being affected by genetic factors, environmental conditions, geographic location or physiological variations [11].…”

“…3.9.2. Reverse-Phase High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (RP-HPLC-ESI-MS) A Varian HPLC system including an autosampler (Varian ProStar 410, Walnut Creek, CA, USA), a ternary pump (Varian ProStar 230I, Walnut Creek, CA, USA), and a PDA detector (Varian ProStar 330, Walnut Creek, CA, USA) were used for reverse-phase highperformance liquid chromatography analysis, as previously reported [82]. Briefly, a liquid chromatograph ion trap mass spectrometer (Varian 500-MS IT Mass Spectrometer, Walnut Creek, CA, USA) equipped with an electrospray ion source was also used.…”
