Antibacterial poly(vinyl alcohol) film containing silver nanoparticles: Preparation and characterization

Abstract: The importance of antibacterial materials for biomedical applications is growing nowadays. The presented article deals with the characterization of structural, mechanical and thermal properties and of antibacterial polymeric films based on polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and silver nitrate, which can find their applicability in wound dressing components and protective coating. The methods of transmission electron microscopy, UV-vis and XRD spectroscopy, optical microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, stress-str… Show more

“…The antimicrobial properties of PVP-CMC and PVP-CMC-BA hydrogels were investigated by agar diffusion method (30,31). Antimicrobial characteristics of these hydrogels were examined on the basis of the dimension of inhibition zone generated in the presence and absence of pathogenic bacteria like Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Klebsiella pneumoniae, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa and fungi like Candida albicans and Candida parapsi-losis.TYve antibacterial assay was conducted in a sterile nutrient agar (2%) medium that was inoculated with the aforementioned bacterial strains under aseptic condition.…”

“…Recently, many efforts have focused on the design and fabrication of polymer/metal nanoparticle (like silver) complexes due to their remarkable electronic, magnetic, catalytic, thermal and optical properties [29]. Basic principle for the fabrication of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) involves the reduction of metal salts like silver nitrate (AgNO 3 ) in an appropriate medium using various reducing agents and surfactants to produce colloidal suspensions integrated by nanoparticles [29][30][31][32]. Unlike elemental silver, silver salts easily dissolve in water, and they increase the rate of Ag + ion formation over that from elemental silver.…”

“…The antimicrobial properties of polymer sheet covers (BF and BL) were investigated by the agar diffusion method [20,[32][33][34]. Antimicrobial characteristics of these polymer sheets were examined on the basis of the dimension of the inhibition zone generated in the presence of pathogenic bacteria like Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aur).…”
