Tecoma stans is a flowering plant belonging to the family Bignoniaceae. It is the floral emblem of the Bahamas. Abutilon indicum belongs to the family Malvaceae. It is also called Indian Mallow. Tecoma stans and Abutilon indicumhave antimicrobial activity and can be used in producing antibiotics. There is an urgent need to produce new antibiotics as there is an increase in the development of pathogen resistant drugs. The aim of this study was to compare the antimicrobial activity of ethanolic extract of Tecoma stansand Abutilonindicum leaves. E.faecalis bacteria were maintained in nutrient agar slopes. The powder of the two herbs, were subjected to extraction by Soxhlet extractor and was concentrated to dry residue by Agar well diffusion method. The nutrient broth was inoculated with bacterial strains. The culture was adjusted to 0.5McFarland turbidity standard. Lawn culture was done in Muller-Hinton agar plate and then the plates were dried. A 6 mm diameter well is bored for different concentrations. The extracts were introduced into the well and allowed to stand for 24 hrs. The antibacterial activity was determined by measuring the zone of inhibition. The present finding on the antimicrobial potential of Abutilon indicum and Tecoma stands showed that the two plants have growth inhibitory activity against oral pathogen E. faecalis. Abutilon indicum has a zone of inhibition greater than Tecoma stans. Abutilon indicum exhibited better activity compared to Tecoma stans.

Staphylococcus epidermidis merupakan bakteri flora normal kulit. Ketidaknormalan flora normal akan menyebabkan gangguan kulit diantaranya jerawat. Pengembangan kosmesetika sebagai antibakteri perlu terus dilakukan salah satunya menggunakan bahan alam daun beluntas. Beluntas merupakan tanaman yang memiliki aktivitas sebagai antibakteri dan anti inflamasi karena mengandung metabolit sekunder seperti tannin, polifenol, flavonoid dan minyak atsiri. Ekstrak dilakukan purifikasi untuk memperkecil massa ekstrak. Tujuan penelitian dilakukan untuk mengevaluasi ekstrak terpurifikasi daun beluntas dalam formulasi krim sebagai kandidat kosmesetika yang dapat menghambat pertumbahan bakteri S. epidermidis. Sediaan krim dilakukan pengamatan karakteristik fisik untuk melihat stabilitas krim dalam penyimpanan. Sediaan krim dilakukan uji antibakteri terhadap S. epidermidis menggunakan metode difusi. Krim yang mengandung ekstrak daun beluntas 5% b/v, 10% b/v dan 15% b/v memiliki aktivitas antibakteri terhadap S. epidermidis dengan diameter zona hambat berturut – turut sebesar 9,9±0,022 mm (sedang), 14,9±0,019 mm (kuat), dan 20,9±0,049 mm (sangat kuat). Krim daun beluntas tidak mengalami perubahan pada pengujian organoleptis. Pengujian nilai pH dan viskositas mengalami peningkatan tetapi masih memenuhi kriteria sediaan krim.

The success rate of aquaculture is highly influenced by several factors, including optimum water quality, feed management, and microorganism control. Several microorganisms interfere with the quality of media and fish culture, i.e., fish growth. Aeromonas and Vibrio are the main pathogenic bacteria that disrupt fish growth and cause mortality. Sidr leaf (Ziziphus spina-christi) extract contains phytochemicals that have antibacterial properties. This study aimed to identify the phytochemical components and analyze the effect of Sidr leaf extract on the growth of aquaculture-based pathogenic bacteria. Sidr leaf extract was obtained using ethanol and tested via phytochemical analysis, chemical analysis, prediction of activity spectra for substances (PASS) examination, and inhibition capability against Aeromonas hydrophila, Aeromonas caviae, Aeromonas sobria, Pseudomonas putida, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Streptococcus agalactiae, Vibrio vulnificus, Vibrio harveyi, Vibrio parahaemolyticus, and Vibrio alginolyticus. The results showed that Sidr leaf extract contained phytochemicals, namely, flavonoids, alkaloids, saponins, tannins, and steroids. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry analyses showed that the Sidr leaf extract contained 30 compounds with antiseborrheic effects. PASS analysis demonstrated that 15 compounds (64.51% level) have potential as antibacterial, with a probability activity value of more than 0.300. The inhibition test showed that the Sidr leaf extract exhibited moderate-to-strong inhibition against pathogenic bacterial growth, except for V. vulnificus, for which it produced a weak inhibition. The results indicate that Sidr leaf extract can be used as a natural herb to control bacterial pathogens in fish cultivation.
