Antibacterial, Antiproliferative, and Immunomodulatory Activity of Silver Nanoparticles Synthesized with Fucans from the Alga Dictyota mertensii

Abstract: In this study, we aimed to synthesize silver nanoparticles containing fucans from Dictyota mertensii (Martius) Kützing using an environmentally friendly method and to characterize their structure as well as antiproliferative, immunomodulatory, and antibacterial effects. Fucan-coated silver nanoparticles (FN) were characterized by Fourier-transform infrared analysis, dynamic light scattering, zeta potential, atomic force microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and inductively coupled plasma emission s… Show more

“…First, fucoidan was mixed with silver nitrate (AgNO 3 ) solution to form AgNPs. Fucoidan was used as capping agents as well as reducing agents for the formation of stable AgNPs [ 43 ]. Then, chitosan was added to the fucoidan-coated AgNPs to form stable AgNPs coated with chitosan–fucoidan polyelectrolyte complexes.…”

“…The various fractions may contain carbohydrates with different level of negative ions due to their sulfate groups. Most of the fractions showed bactericidal effects, which might be due to the presence of sulfated molecules, such as carrageenans [21], fucans [22], and laminarin [23] in different fractions.…”
