Antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and anti-osteoclastogenic activities of <i>Colocasia antiquorum</i> var. <i>esculenta</i>: Potential applications in preventing and treating periodontal diseases

Abstract: This study aimed to investigate the inhibitory effects of Colocasia antiquorum var. esculenta (CA) on Porphyromonas gingivalis (P. gingivalis) growth, inflammation, and osteoclastogenesis. CA was effective in inhibiting the growth of P. gingivalis when applied together with an experimental fluoride varnish. CA also significantly decreased the release of interleukin-6, tumor necrosis factor-α, and nitric oxide from lipopolysaccharide-induced RAW 264.7 cells. No significant differences in viability were noted be… Show more

“…We demonstrated that 75% ethanolic extract of CA has antibacterial activity against P. gingivalis 33277. In a previous study, the antibacterial activity of CA methanolic extract inhibited the growth of P. gingivalis by 40% [ 17 ]. We found that the MIC of 75% ethanolic extract of CA was lower than that of CA methanolic extract.…”

“…CA (Namwon-si, Korea) extract was purchased from the Korea Plant Extract Bank of the Korea Research Institute of Bioscience and Biotechnology (KRIBB, Daejeon, Korea). The method for preparing the extract was described in a previous study [ 17 ] except the extraction solvent was 75% ethyl alcohol. The plant was dried in the shade and powdered, and the powder was added to 1 L of ethyl alcohol 75% (GR Grade) and extracted through 30 cycles (40 KHz, 1500 W, 15 min ultrasonication, and 120 min standing per cycle) at room temperature using an ultrasonic extractor (SDN-900H, SD-ULTRASONIC CO., LTD., Seoul, Korea).…”

“…For determining the sustainability of antibacterial activity, an experimental fluoride varnish (FV) was fabricated as a carrier for A. incisum . The experimental FV was formulated according to a previously reported method [ 17 ]. Briefly, the experimental FV was composed of 45 wt.% rosin, 50 wt.% ethanol, and 5 wt.% sodium fluoride.…”
