The increased resistance of pathogenic bacteria to traditional therapy has forced the implementation of different therapies. The consequent use of more than one antibacterial drug can increase toxicity problems, an undesirable situation, especially when it comes to therapy for immunosuppressed patients. Bacterial resistance to different drugs is a war between "humans and bacteria". For this reason, it is important to keep looking for new alternatives for the treatment of pathogenic bacteria. In this study, we determined the antimicrobial activity of methanolic extracts of Lippia graveolens, Sphagneticola trilobata and Gliricidia sepium against four pathogenic bacteria: Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae and Staphylococcus aureus. Pseudomonas aeruginosa was the strain most affected by antagonistic activity of all the extracts evaluated, followed by E. coli and S. aureus. We found that S. trilobata was the plant with the highest activity. We carried out tests mixing extracts (1:1) from different parts of each plant, where there was antagonistic and synergistic activity. These results are very promising, since these bacteria are currently being studied for their high resistance mechanisms to a wide variety of antibiotics.

Helichrysum graveolens (Bieb) Sweet possesses various medicinal applications such as diuretic, treatment of the sand and stone in kidney, regulation of digestion problems and strenghtening of the immune system. The investigation was carried out to reveal ethanol extracts of flower and stem parts of H. graveolens for antimicrobial, antioxidant, anti-tyrosinase and anti-urease activities. Ethanol extract of stem part of H. graveolens exhibited more antibacterial activity against growth of bacteria except for K. pneumoniae. Stem part of H. graveolens has higher copper reducing antioxidant capacity (CUPRAC) and anti-urease activities than flower part of H. graveolens. Anti-tyrosinase activity (IC50 values) of stem and flower parts of H. graveolens was found to be 0.01549 ± 0.0006 μg/ml and 0.01515 ± 0.0016 μg/ml, respectively. This survey suggests that ethanol extracts of different parts of H. graveolens is an alternative source for natural antioxidant and antimicrobial compounds, urease and tyrosinase inhibitors that could be utilized in drug and food industries.

Introduction: The present study was aimed for phytochemical analysis, investigations of different functional groups, the hypoglycemic potential of Fagonia indica leaves extracts, Reverse phase high performance liquid chromatography (RP-HPLC) and gas chromatography-mass spectroscopy (GC-MS) analysis of the most active hypoglycemic methanol extract. Methods: After extraction using cold maceration method, phytochemical screening, Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, investigation of in vitro hypoglycemic potential of leaves extracts of the plant by α-glucosidase (sucrase) inhibitory assay were assessed using the standard methods. RP-HPLC and GC-MS analysis of the most active methanol extract was done to identify various biologically active compounds. Results: Phytochemical analysis showed various phytochemicals in the plant. FTIR spectral analysis showed diagnostic peaks of various functional groups. Methanol extract of the plant leaves showed the highest sucrase inhibition (37.0±1.4%) at 100 μg/mL concentration. It was followed by aqueous extract (29.1±1%), chloroform extract (27.7±0.5%) and n-hexane extract (25.5±0.9%) at the same concentration. RP-HPLC and GC-MS analysis of methanol extract showed the presence of various compounds with specific retention times. Conclusion:The plant leaves possessed in vitro hypoglycemic potential with competitive inhibition of enzyme sucrase. Methanol extract is the most effective agent in managing diabetes due to the presence of bioactive phytocomponents.
