Antibacterial Activity of Two Zn-MOFs Containing a Tricarboxylate Linker

Abstract: Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) can be used as reservoirs of metal ions with relevant antibacterial effects. Here, two novel Zn-based MOFs with the formulas [Zn4(μ4-O)(μ-FA)L2] (GR-MOF-8) and [Zn4(μ4-O)L2(H2O)] (GR-MOF-9) (H3L: 5-((4-carboxyphenyl)ethynyl) in isophthalic acid and FA (formate anion) were solvothermally synthetized and fully characterized. The antibacterial activity of GR-MOF-8 and 9 was investigated against Staphylococcus aureus (SA) and Escherichia Coli (EC) by the agar diffusion method. Both … Show more

“…Thus, the highest inhibition activity of ZIF-8@HA can be attributed to the stabilization effect of HA on its degradation profile, in agreement with the stability test (Figure S8). Thus, ZIF-8@HA acts as a metal reservoir, making it more effective in the inhibition of the pathogen growth, as previously reported in other Zn-based materials . These results demonstrate the potential of MOF@HA composites to develop multifunctional agrochemicals, improving the fertilizer and antibacterial effect of the individual components, HA and MOF, respectively.…”

“…The World Health Organization (WHO) finds it particularly concerning that multi- and pan-resistant bacteria are rapidly spreading worldwide and causing diseases that are not treatable with the current antimicrobial medications such antibiotics, antivirals, antifungals, etc. 2 . Studies using diverse plant components, including leaf, flowers, roots, stems, seeds, and peels extracts, to biosynthesize NPs have drawn attention to use plant extracts as platforms for MNP synthesis.…”

“…In this regard, transition metal based materials appear to be a promising alternative because they exhibit low toxicity and a relatively low cost. They can present compelling properties as pure metal nanoparticles [ 3 ], oxide particles [ 4 ], or ions [ 5 ]. Zinc (II) and copper (II) ions are particularly interesting for antibacterial applications since they are involved in numerous biological pathways.…”
