Antibacterial Activity of Cotton Fabrics Treated With Poly (Vinyl Alcohol)/ZnO Nanocomposites, Photocatalyzed by UV Irradiation

Abstract: Cotton fabrics with antimicrobial properties were prepared by treatment with aqueous solutions of poly vinyl alcohol/zinc oxide (PVA/ZnO) nanocomposites and subsequently exposed to UV radiation. The ZnO nanoparticles, PVA/ZnO nanocomposite films, and treated cotton fabrics were characterized by transmission electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis. The antibacterial finishing of the treated cotton fabrics was evaluated towa… Show more

“…Antimicrobial agents have been widely applied in agriculture, the environment, medicine, textiles, food, food packaging, and other industries to protect individuals against microorganisms. Among the three types of commonly used antimicrobial agents, the inorganic ones exhibit high antimicrobial efficiency and good heat stability . However, there is an increasing concern about their potential perniciousness to the environment and human health from the leaching of heavy metals .…”

“…Among the three types of commonly used antimicrobial agents, the inorganic ones exhibit high antimicrobial efficiency and good heat stability . However, there is an increasing concern about their potential perniciousness to the environment and human health from the leaching of heavy metals . Organic antimicrobial materials are commonly used and include quaternary ammonium, polybiguanides, and N ‐halamine materials .…”

“…Nowadays, mainly two mechanisms, microbial killing and microbial repelling, are widely developed for antimicrobial materials . The former may not only cause microbial resistance but also pose a threat to the environment and human safety . We designed a mild microbially antiadhesive method, which should belong to a microbial‐repelling instead of a microbial‐killing method.…”

“… where N 0 means the number of bacterial colonies on the pristine cotton fabrics after 16 h contact and N 1 refers to that of treated cotton fabrics. According to GB/T 8629–2001 standard method, the durability of the PSPB-AM-AGE treated textiles against repeated launderings was investigated by the washing process (Hassan 2017 ). Then the antibacterial activities of textiles were tested by aforementioned viable cell count method.…”

“…However, the applications of the chitosan are restricted due to the pH-sensitive of finishing solution (Shahid Islam 2020 ) and poor adhesion to cotton fibers without the cross-linker (Lim 2003 ). Plenty of organic agents such as quaternary ammonium compounds (QACs) (Lu 2019 ), N-halamine (Liu 2017 ; Wang 2018 ), triclosan, and zwitterionic materials are introduced to impart biocidal functions (Hassan 2017 ). Questions have been raised about the drug resistance of the prolonged use of QACs and triclosan (Chen 2011a ; Wu 2015 ).…”
