A New Antimicrobial Agent: Poly (3‐hydroxybutyric acid) Oligomer

Abstract: In this work, it is first reported that the poly (3‐hydroxybutyric acid) (PHB) oligomer with a few degrees of polymerization possesses effective antibacterial and antifungal properties. Two preparation methods for the PHB oligomer are described, namely, one‐step ring‐opening polymerization of β‐butyrolactone and extraction from the fermented PHB polymer. An appropriate amount of the synthesized PHB oligomer shows no physiological toxicity to the skin and major organs of mice. Topological application of the syn… Show more

“…HCl solution (2 m, 20 mL) was injected to quench the reaction, prior to an extraction with DCM. PHB oligomer was obtained after removal of the DCM by vacuum evaporation and separation by column chromatography (DCM/n-hexane = 5:1, v: v) [9].…”

“…We have reported previously that the synthesized poly (3- (methicillin-resistant S. aureus, ATCC 43300) with reduction rate of 99.97% [9]. The PHB oligomer is degradable, durable, eco-friendly and safe, thus has significant advantages for the applications in healthcare field.…”

“…In the present study, we attempted to perform the secretory production of 3HB oligomers (3HBOs), which are widely distributed as physiologically active substances in nature and are found in various prokaryotes and eukaryotes . For example, 3HBOs have been identified as a sex pheromone in a spider and as a growth‐promoting factor in Frateuria bacterium in relation to soil bacteria diversification .…”

“…For example, 3HBOs have been identified as a sex pheromone in a spider and as a growth‐promoting factor in Frateuria bacterium in relation to soil bacteria diversification . Most recently, 3HBOs were also reported to exhibit antibacterial activity against some pathogenic and drug‐resistant bacteria . Terminally methyl‐esterified 3HBOs are known to effectively scavenge hydroxyl radicals .…”

“…The synthesis of polymers in plants is an interesting issue and it can be mainly performed not for the production of these compounds, but rather to change plant properties. Recently it has been shown that PHB oligomers may have antifungal and antibacterial properties (Ma et al 2019), and that amino-PHB polymers may acts as anti-cancer and antimicrobial agents (Abdelwahab et al 2019).…”
