Antibacterial Activity and Reversal of Multidrug Resistance of Tumor Cells by Essential Oils from Fresh Leaves, Flowers, and Stems of Montanoa quadrangularis Schultz Bipontinus (Asteraceae) Collected in Mérida—Venezuela

Abstract: Essential oils obtained by hydrodistillation of Montanoa quadrangularis leaves, flowers, and stems were analyzed by GC and GC/MS techniques revealing myrcene, limonene, β-phellandrene, and sabinene among the main components. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the MDR modulator activity on human MDR1 gene transfected mouse lymphoma cell line and the antimicrobial activity on the essential oils obtained from different parts of the species under investigation. The results revealed that MQL caused a simi… Show more

“…For disc preparation, 10 μ l of each extract was dropped onto a 5 mm diameter paper disc and then plated on a TSA plate containing bacteria, and incubated at 37°C for 24 h. Reference antibiotics used in this study were 25 μ g of Ampicillin® and Penicillin®. The inhibitory zones around the discs were observed, measured, and expressed in mm [ 30 ]. All the experiments were carried out in triplicate.…”
