Antibacterial Activity and Physical Properties of Fish Gelatin-Chitosan Edible Films Supplemented with D-Limonene

Abstract: Fish gelatin-chitosan edible films with D-limonene were successfully prepared, which exhibited exceptional mechanical properties and antimicrobial activity. It has been demonstrated that water-soluble chitosan, fish gelatin, and D-limonene could be a candidate precursor to prepare low cost and high-performance edible food packaging material. The results showed that D-limonene in the films could effectively resist the penetration of light and water because of its hydrophobicity. Moreover, the elongation at brea… Show more

“…The characteristic bands at 1639 and 1546 cm -1 (non-treated and scCO 2 -treated G/Ch 50:50 ) correspond to Amide-I, representing C=O stretching vibration coupled with C-N stretch, and Amide-II, bending vib-ration of N-H groups and stretching vibration from C-N groups, respectively (Figure 4, spectra (a) and (b)) [23]. In the spectra of the G/Ch 50:50 film containing CO the aforementioned bands are shifted to somewhat higher wavenumbers, 1665 and 1559 cm -1 , respectively (Figure 4, spectrum (c)).…”

“…Incorporation of plant extracts and essential oils or their components into G/Ch blends can enhance the quality and safety of seafood products primarily for their antimicrobial activity [20,22,23]. Essential oils from aromatic plants and spices represent an attracttive natural alternative to chemical additives used in the food industry [24].…”

“…The high solubility of gelatin films is associated with the presence of hydrophilic aminoacids that rehydrate in contact with water, thus increasing their solubility levels (Hoque et al, 2011;Yao, Ding, Shao, Peng, & Huang, 2017). In the present study, the comparative lower values are related to the addition of BO as well as to the low concentration of gelatin, which altogether contribute to the hydrophobicity of the optimized film, thus decreasing its dissolution.…”
