Antianaphylactic effects of the ethanolic extract from the petals of Impatiens balsamina L. in mice

Abstract: The antianaphylactic activity of 35% EtOH extract (IB) from the white petals of Impatiens balsamina L. was investigated using murine immediate hypersensitivity reaction system induced by hen egg-white lysozyme (HEL). IB has a significant antianaphylactic activity. Keywords: Impatiens balsamina L; hen egg-white lysozyme; anaphylaxis in mice. The aerial parts of lmpatiens balsamia L. serve as a Chinese herbal medicine for the treatment of articular rheumatism, bruises and beriberi (Dictionary of Chinese Crude Drug… Show more

“…HEL Sensitization Immunization with hen egg-white lysozyme (HEL) was performed as previously described 16) with slight modification. Male ddY mice of 5 weeks of age were sensitized interperitonealy with 50 mg of HEL in complete Freund's adjuvant (DIFCO) on day 0.…”

“…HEL Sensitization Immunization with HEL was performed as previously described 1) with slight modification. Male ddY mice of 5 weeks of age were sensitized subcutaneously with 50 mg of HEL in complete Freund's adjuvant (DIFCO) on day 0.…”

“…1) This assay system, which uses monitoring of decrease in the blood pressure 2) or blood flow 3) in anaphylaxis response, enabled us to study dynamics of anaphylactic response in the same individual animals without killing them. Hence, we elucidated the participation of nitric oxide (NO) in mouse anaphylactic hypotension, 4) and the anti-anaphylactic effects of Impatiens balsamina L., from which anti-anaphylactic compounds have been isolated.…”

“…To focus on the relationship between iNOS and other factors, all reagents were used at effective doses that led to complete recovery of blood flow decrease as described previously. 1) None of the reagents alone affected the blood flow. The statistical calculations are shown in comparison with the HEL-sensitized group (the control group).…”

“…1) This assay system monitors the decrease in blood pressure 2) or blood flow 3) as anaphylaxis response and makes possible investigation of the dynamics of the anaphylactic response in the same individual animals without killing them. We have also discovered a distinctive phenomenon in which the blood flow of vein microcirculation is markedly decreased by HEL-sensitization alone without the HEL-challenge.…”
