Antiallergic Effects of Lactobacillus pentosus Strain S-PT84 Mediated by Modulation of Th1/Th2 Immunobalance and Induction of IL-10 Production

Abstract: Background: Many types of fermented food are consumed in Japan. Although some are produced by plant-origin lactic-acid bacteria (LAB) fermentation, the physiological functions of such bacteria remain unclear. We therefore isolated LAB of plant origin from Kyoto pickles and determined the immunological activity of heat-killed preparations of plant-origin LAB. Methods: The Lactobacillus pentosus strain S-PT84 was selected from among 16 LAB of plant origin as the strongest interleukin (IL)-12-inducing strain. IL-… Show more

“…Although lactobacilli and bifidobacteria are often used as probiotics, their functions seem to be different. Nonaka et al suggested that lactobacilli modulate the Th1/Th2 immune balance toward Th1 reactions (8). Shima et al reported that the Lactobacillus casei strain Shirota enhances the expression of genes involved in defense/ immune functions and in lipid metabolism, whereas the B. breve strain Yakult downregulates the expression of many genes (26).…”

“…In numerous human trials, although the precise mechanisms have not been determined, intake of lactobacilli and bifidobacteria has been reported to be beneficial with respect to stool frequency and stool consistency (2,3). The potential benefit of probiotics in the modulation and regulation of the immune response has also been reported in both humans and animals (4)(5)(6)(7)(8).…”

“…Recently, it has been reported that IL-10 and TGF-β produced by regulatory T cells suppress allergic inflammatory responses (Hayashi et al, 2009;Nonaka et al, 2008). Therefore, studies on MN45 induction of anti-inflammatory cytokines and anti-allergic effect are now in progress.…”

“…Some of antiallergic LAB were isolated from traditional fermented foods, such as Kyoto pickles ( 15 ), soy sauce moromi ( 16 ), and Mongolian fermented milk ( 17 ). Traditional fermented foods-derived LAB are able to exert certain immunomodulatory effects, but there are not many reports concerning their beneficial effects on AD.…”
