Antiallergic effect of the root of Paeonia lactiflora and its constituents paeoniflorin and paeonol

Abstract: The root of Paeonia lactiflora PALL (PL, Family Paeoniaceae) has been used frequently as an antipyretic and anti-inflammatory agent in traditional medicines of Korea, China and Japan. To evaluate antiallergic effect of PL, we isolated its main constituents, paeoniflorin and paeonol, and evaluated in vivo their inhibitory effects against passive cutaenous anaphylaxis (PCA) reaction induced by IgE-antigen complex and scratching behaviors induced by compound 48/80. PL, paeoniflorin and paeonol potently inhibited … Show more

“…It has numerous pharmacological effects including anti-inflammatory, anti-allergy, hepatoprotective and neuromuscular blocking, among others (13)(14)(15)(16)(17). Our previous investigation revealed that paeoniflorin inhibits NF-κB activation and enhances 5-fluorouracil (5-FU)-induced apoptosis in the human gastric carcinoma cell line, SGC790 (18).…”

“…However, pinellic acid alone was not sufficient to induce all the anti-allergic activities of SCRT, and some other active constituents seem to play a combinatorial role in the medicine [15]. Other ingredients such as paeoniflorin [23], a-asarone [24], Schizan [15], drin [25], 6-gingerol [26] and glycyrrhizic acid [27,28] have also been suggested to contribute to a protection against allergy. The present study demonstrated that SCRT is effective to treat AR in a mouse model.…”

“…In several models of pain, Radix Paeoniae was demonstrated to relieve the pain effectively [6][7][8][9]. Intramuscular injection of TGP suppressed writhing induced by intraperitoneal injection of acetic acid, squeak induced by footpad stimulation with electricity and hot-plate reaction of mice (5-40 mg/kg) and/or rats (50-125 mg/kg) in a dose-dependant manner.…”
