Anti-trypanosomal activity of (8-hydroxymethylen)-trieicosanyl acetate against infective forms of Trypanosoma cruzi

Abstract: The activity of an (8-hydroxymethylen)-trieicosanyl acetate compound obtained from chloroform extracts of Senna villosa (Mill.) H.S. Irwin & Barneby (Leguminosae) against Trypanosoma cruzi was evaluated in vivo. Oral doses of 2.1, 8.4, and 33.6 microg/g were tested for 28 days in BALB/c mice infected with T. cruzi. Reduced parasitemia levels of 70.5%, 73.8%, and 80.9%, respectively, were observed. A significant reduction in amastigote nests was detected in the cardiac tissue of treated animals at doses of 8.4 … Show more

“…Natural products isolated from different botanical sources exhibited activity against T. cruzi (see Table 2). [120][121][122][123][124][125][126][127][128][129][130][131][132] Several approaches have been developed focusing on identification and isolation of plantbased products with anti-T. cruzi activity 133,134 (Table 2). In this sense, extracts from different plants as Salvia, Valeriana, Hypericum, Silybum, Arnica, and Curcuma showed activity against T. cruzi.…”

“…An aqueous extract is also used for the treatment of irregular menstruation and inflammatory problems [32]. It has been reported to have trypanocidal and antiprotozoal activities [33,34,35,36,37,38]. However, the anti-inflammatory activity of this plant and its active components has not yet been systematically studied.…”
