“…The salivary levels of TIMP-1 significantly decreased after treatment in both groups. In line with our findings, the MMP-8/TIMP-1 axis ratio in saliva has been positively associated with the periodontal inflammatory burden index [ 43 ], which suggests that the reduction in salivary levels of the MMP-8/TIMP-1 axis reflected the inflammatory status of the disease. To date, no study has evaluated the impact of peri-implant treatment on TIMP-1 levels.…”

“…Given the likely bidirectional relationship between both diseases and the chronic inflammatory process, the key pathologic element in both, it is reasonable to hypothesize that rheumatoid arthritis treatment, based on host-modulating therapies, may have a significant impact on the periodontal status of rheumatoid arthritis patients with periodontitis [114][115][116][117][118][119][120][121][122][123][124][125][126][127][128][129] (Table 6). In one of the first studies on this premise, Pers et al 114 observed that antitumor necrosis factor-alpha treatment improved the periodontal status of rheumatoid arthritis patients with periodontitis.…”

“…It is not yet well known whether treatment with biological DMARDS, besides its effect on the periodontal inflammatory burden, also results in changes in saliva and gingival crevicular fluid (GCF). For example, Äyräväinen et al, () recently showed that treatment of RA with synthetic or biologic DMARDs did not affect salivary MMP‐8 levels (Äyräväinen et al, ).…”
